Harm avoidance and affective modulation of the startle reflex: A replication
نویسندگان
چکیده
Affective modulation of the eyeblink startle reflex, by unpleasant slides, was found to be limited to subjects high on Harm Avoidance (HA; Cloninger, 1986); low HA subjects did not respond to unpleasant slides with potentiated startle reflexes. This result provides a replication of Corr, Wilson, Fotiadou, Kumari, Gray, Checkley and Gray (1995a), and supports the hypothesis that individual differences in trait anxiety are important in affective modulation of the startle reflex. It is concluded that Cloninger’s HA should be routinely included in future startle modulation experiments.

Personality and Affective Modulation of the Startle Reflex
The human startle reflex, as indexed by strength of eyeblink to a sudden, loud noise, has been shown to vary according to the presence of pleasant and unpleasant stimuli. An experiment was conducted to determine whether this effect is in turn dependent on the personality of the subject. Subjects viewed a series of slides classified as pleasant, unpleasant or neutral, with acoustic startle probe...

Startle reflex modulation by affective pictures is a well-established effect in human emotion research. However, much less is known about startle modulation by affective faces, despite the growing evidence that facial expressions robustly activate emotion-related brain circuits. In this study, acoustic startle probes were administered to 37 young adult participants (20 women) during the viewing...
متن کاملEffects of Anticipatory Anxiety on Emotion Processing
The present study examined the effects of anticipatory anxiety on the affective modulation of the eyeblink startle reflex. Towards this end, pleasant, neutral and unpleasant pictures were presented as a continuous stream during alternating threat-ofshock and safety periods, which were cued by colored picture frames. Orbicularis EMG to auditory startle probes and electrodermal activity were reco...
متن کاملEffects of approach-avoidance related motor behaviour on the startle response during emotional picture processing.
Motivational states may be induced by affective foreground stimulation or via proprioceptive feedback by certain postures or body movements. In the present study, we addressed the question of an interaction between basic motor actions and the valence of visual stimuli in an affective modulation of startle paradigm: is the potentiation for aversive and the attenuation for pleasant stimuli more p...

Objective : the studies indicate that the "eye-blink" components of "acoustic startle reflex" can be modulated through emotionally slide stimuli. Pleasant stimulants reduce eye-blink amplitude, whereas unpleasant stimulants enhance them. Method: the present study examines the modulation of the acoustic startle reflexes through a short film clips (2-min), classified as pleasant, unpleasant and...
